SERRATIA MARCESCENSBACTERAEMIA IN PRETERM NEONATE - A CASE REPORT

Background: Serratia marcescenshas emerged as opportunist in increasing number of hospital-associated infections neonatal intensive care unit (NICUs), particularly bloodstream infections. It is known to cause outbreaks the NICUs, with high mortality rate vulnerable preterm population. Case presentation: We present a case one and half month-old neonate who had complaints intolerance feeding failure thrive. Clinical investigation revealed anaemia increased inflammatory markers. Blood culture showed growth ofS marcescens.In antimicrobial susceptibility testing, isolate all β-lactams, aminoglycosides sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, but treatment occurred empirical amikacin piperacillin-tazobactam. Institution meropenem good response. Discussion: In premature babies very low birth weight along prolonged NICU stay predisposed them S marcescens infection. The capacity resist antibiotic therapy vivo spite vitro sensitivity was exemplified our case. Conclusion: This study portrays important feature develop in-vivo resistance despite being sensitive by testing which led therapeutic failure. Carbapenem could be choice such cases due marcescens.
